Our Garden Project was created to address the fact that unemployment and poverty make it impossible for parents to create safe and caring environments for their children.
The garden has grown from humble beginnings to an award-winning project – they were awarded the first runner-up prize at the Agri Business Women in 2012, in the category of Best Community Project and won the Nestle Community Nutrition Award in 2016.
COPESSA runs two garden projects in Protea Glen, one located at Faranani Primary School and the other one at the Joe Gqabi Integrated Centre. We plant both on the ground and in Veggie Tunnels. The produce from the Veggie Tunnels is sold to a local Pick n Pay and surplus is shared by the participants in the project and also donated to school feeding programmes.
The tunnels were donated by the following:
- South African German Network (Sage-Net)
- Aspen Pharmacare
- Consol Glass (Pty) Ltd
- Mango Airlines
- Eskom Foundation
- Randwater Foundation
